Scouts, the UK’s largest mixed youth movement, supports nearly half a million young people through a powerful blend of national consistency and local independence. To maintain a strong, unified brand across thousands of volunteer-led groups, Scouts partnered with Brand iQ to create a centralised platform that empowers local teams while safeguarding brand integrity at scale.

Overview

Scouts is the largest mixed youth movement in the UK. The charity helps nearly half a million young people gain skills for life and a place to belong.  It’s part of a global youth organisation dedicated to helping young people become confident, responsible and active members of their communities. Across the UK, thousands of local Scout Groups deliver this mission through volunteer-led programmes tailored to their communities.

To balance consistency with local independence, Scouts operate through a model that increasingly resembles a franchise structure: a shared brand, clear standards and centrally governed frameworks combined with locally delivered services. This approach ensures a recognisable and trusted national identity while allowing each group flexibility to respond to local needs.

The Challenge: Consistency at Scale

Like a franchise network, Scouts operates under a single, highly recognisable brand. All Scout Groups share common values, visual identity, uniforms and messaging, reinforcing the identity and credibility nationwide.

However, at the local level, Scout Groups function independently:

·      They are embedded within their communities

·      They are managed primarily by volunteers

·      Each group reflects the unique characteristics of its location

Without centralised support, local groups risked using outdated, inconsistent or off-brand materials. Limited access to professional marketing expertise further increased the risk of brand dilution.

Scout groups needed a simple, reliable way to access official resources, with customisation capabilities for local use, and to produce high-quality digital and print materials, with confidence that all outputs aligned with national brand standards. One that would standardise brand delivery while supporting local independence.

Brand iQs role

As the Scouts continue to grow following its major rebrand in 2018, the complexity of managing brand consistency across thousands of independent groups has increased substantially.

In response to this need, Scouts partnered with Brand iQ to develop a centralised brand management platform.

The platform provides every UK Scout Group with:

·      Access to official, up-to-date brand assets

·      Editable, localised templates

·      Integrated print-on-demand services

·      Digital Communication Resources

·      Fulfilment & Logistics

The platform ensures:

·      Consistent, high-quality brand output across all franchise locations and touchpoints.

·      Maintains unified signage, recruitment materials, event collateral, merchandise and campaign assets system-wide.

·      Protects brand integrity while allowing local franchisees flexibility within approved guidelines.

·      Empowers franchise teams and volunteers to create materials quickly and independently.

·      Reduces reliance on the head office for everyday marketing needs.

·      Streamlines asset creation to save time, lowers costs and accelerates local campaigns.

·      Strengthens overall brand recognition while supporting local market activations.

A dedicated Account Manager further supports this process by acting as a consistent point of contact between Scouts headquarters and Brand iQ. This role ensures smooth communication, oversees template development and print production, maintains quality standards and supports upcoming campaigns and brand updates.

Scale and Adoption

Since the implementation, the platform has achieved extensive adoption across the organisation:

·      51,307 registered users over eight years

·      6,403 new users in 2025 alone

·      11,658 Scout groups actively using the platform

The platform hosts a comprehensive library of resources, including:

·      16 physical stock items

·      539 Print-on-Demand and editable templates

·      1,645 digital assets, including videos, documents, presentations and social media templates.

·      221,713 individual product order lines

In 2025 alone, 39,882 editable items were ordered, with customisable organisational logos being the most frequently used feature. Over the past year, 21,662 orders were placed, contributing to a total of 205,608 orders since April 2018.

An example of resources, highly produced and ordered from the platform, is Recruitment material. The recruitment collection includes 60 items across digital and custom formats, generating 119 variants. These are supported by a wider ecosystem of documents such as videos, leaflets, posters, images and pull-up banners, resulting in 9,192 order items.

Similarly, the certificate collection has 92 items available and has generated 3,387 orders, including 44 badge certificates and a total of 384,054 order items.

These resources are pre-approved, with access to customise, download and order. In practical terms, this means that volunteer leaders can rapidly produce recruitment campaigns, recognise achievements and communicate with Scout groups with ease.

Impact & Outcomes

By centralising brand management and preserving local flexibility, Brand iQ has delivered significant benefits to Scouts:

·      Strengthened national brand consistency

·      Reduced reliance on specialist marketing

·      Faster and more efficient material production

·      Improved visibility of brand usage and performance

·      Greater confidence among local volunteers

The platform also provides headquarters with valuable insights into how assets are used, enabling data-informed decisions about future campaigns, updates and investments.

Conclusion

Scouts continue to evolve into a more brand-driven organisation while retaining its charitable, volunteer-led ethos. Brand iQ has become a critical enabler of sustainable growth.

Ensuring that Scout Groups can operate independently and effectively while remaining aligned with a trusted national identity. In doing so, it preserves the organisation’s recognisable culture, strengthens public confidence and equips volunteers with the tools they need to deliver impact in their communities.
